Meet Dr. Malan Cloete

I qualified in 1998 from the University of Pretoria, South Africa, and emigrated to the UK soon afterwards. I have grown very fond of my adopted country (despite the rain!). I consider myself very lucky to live in such a beautiful and historical part of the world. I like nothing better than to cycle along the country lanes of the Cotswolds on a balmy summer's day... and not to mention a cosy pub with a log fire on a chilly winter's eve!
People always ask me: "what on earth made you want to be a dentist? " The truth is, I love doing what I do. Coming from a family of dentists (my father and brother are dentists, as was my grandfather), I suppose it must be in my blood. It must have been fate that I also had to marry a dentist! I consider myself very fortunate to be in a profession which allows me to express my creative side and at the same time bring joy to people who never thought they could have a nice smile.
I am very enthusiastic about all the new developments in this exciting profession. Dentistry really has come a long way in the last few decades. Tooth implants and new cosmetic treatments (invisible braces spring to mind) have significantly expanded the scope of possibilities on offer. Nowadays there really is no need for anybody to suffer the indignation of absent or unsightly teeth. I enjoy all aspects of dentistry, but my special interests are implants, orthodontics and cosmetic makeovers. I regularly attend courses to stay on top of the latest techniques and developments. I completed a year long course in advanced restorative dentistry at the St. Ann's Clinic in Manchester, run by Dr. Paul Tipton. I have acquired my implant training in Boston, Massachusetts and Pretoria, South Africa. Most recently, I have attended a 6-day course on Advanced Bone Management, presented by Prof Liviu Steier in Wimpole Street, London.
I am an associate member of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.
